“The final mystery is oneself. When one has weighed the sun in the balance, and measured the steps of the moon, and mapped out the seven heavens star by star, there sill remains oneself. Who can calculate the orbit of his own soul?” ——- Oscar Wilde

We always get back to ourselves, if we have the verifiable guts to do so. Yes that’s right . . . you could put it in a more gracious manner which suggests intestinal fortitude, courage, perseverance etc., however it always goes back to that basic tenet of plain, old fashioned … guts. There’s no substitute for it, you either have it or you don’t. You either get it or you don’t. In your world as it exists now, do you witness consciousness operating in a functional, sustaining, or even knowing way? Perhaps better yet, as you read this . . . are you conscious of the orbit of who you are, why you’re here and what the purpose of your existence might be? Using the words of a Buddhist text states, “If you can’t find he truth right where you are, where else do you think you will find it?”

Excuses work real well when you choose to inject them for your existence, non-existence via present awareness or consciousness. Of course, the blame game works well too for your non-performance, non engagement or complete disconnect in your own life. Just take a quick look around you, examples of that are pervasive, effusive, definitive and palpable. How many substantive conversations have you had face to face without the interruption of electronic devices, short or non-existent attention spans, convoluted scheduling conflicts and over-programmed beings in the past two weeks, month or year? Better yet, how many times have you looked in the mirror and asked yourself, what am I doing, why and to what purpose does it serve?

Given where you find yourself in this moment, and how consciously honest you are capable of being with yourself . . . may present quite a challenge and one that may shake up your entire being. If that’s the case … congratulations… there’s hope. If not, I believe these words might resonate from Matthew 8:13, “Go they way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.”

In the last analysis as some sports enthusiasts suggest . . . the ball is in your court. No one else is going to take on the responsibility of you. Of course, that assumes you are awake, alert, alive, informed, involved and willing to take on . . . you. No one is going to do that heavy lifting for you. Whomever might have done that in the past for you . . . well . . . take a look around, that moment is gone and what’s left is just you. So once again you have a choice, make it a conscious one. As you focus on where you are, let these words of Herman Hesse rest for a moment in your being . . . “The true vocation of man is to find his way to himself.” JLR
